Important of proper diet

Our lifestyle has gone a major change over a period. We have come a long way from agrarian society to information society. Human knowledge has seen tremendous growth due to technological inventions and discoveries. What once believed impossible now seems possible in every facet of human life! We have achieved automation, sophistication in every endeavor we have undertaken. For us, only sky is the limit. We have evolved as most matured species on mother earth. With this background, it is interesting to see how human body evolved over millions of years and how well it is adapting to changed times.

 

Human body

Human body is a perfect mechanism. It has all the necessary checks and balances to keep it functioning normally and optimally. Every aspect of human body apparently has gone through its own evolutions to reach the perfect state today.  Nonetheless, all ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates, to name a few, are necessary for our body to function properly. Further, the varieties of foods we eat provide the necessary mix of essential elements to our body. What would happen to our body if our diet pattern changes drastically? Naturally, our body mechanism falters, shows various symptoms, and manifests various diseases.

 

Deficiency or imbalance

With rapid social and technological developments, our food habits have gone through major changes over a period. Many prefer eating processed food and most indulge in eating meat, and dairy products, for example, by ignoring the importance of balanced and healthy diet. This improper diet has caused gamut of modern day diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, for instance, that has afflicted our society.

 

Dietary fiber

One of the main ingredients that essential to keep a healthy body is dietary fiber. Dietary fiber or sometimes roughage is the indigestible portion of plant foods having two main components:

One must incorporate fiber in his or her diet. It acts like a broom and cleans up the body by throwing out the toxins, fats, and wastes. Interestingly, fiber acts like a sponge passing through the intestine. Moreover, fiber has water holding and bulk-forming properties to cleanse and helps to lower cholesterol.

 

Soluble fiber

Soluble fiber is fermented in the colon into gases and physiologically active byproducts. The soluble fiber found in most fruits and vegetables is effective in reducing cholesterol, controlling appetite, and controlling blood sugar in diabetics. It acts as a barrier and delays absorption of carbohydrates, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. It helps to normalize blood pressure and promotes the growth of friendly bacteria.

 

Insoluble fiber

Insoluble fiber is metabolically inert, absorbs water throughout the digestive system and eases defecation.The insoluble fiber found in wheat bran, brown rice, and most cereals has a laxative effect on reducing transit time of the stools thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Finally, it is important to incorporate balanced diet to keep us healthy. Indeed, food plays an important role in keeping our body functioning properly and optimally. Moreover, we can effectively stay off from many of modern day diseases by having a good diet alone.
